A day after
burying their friend and former teammate Scott Herr, the CHS
boys’ varsity hockey team returned to the ice following two
cancellations and offered a fitting tribute in the form of two
blowout victories: 5-0 over Stoughton and 9-1 over a frustrated
King Philip team.
Head coach
Brian Shuman said the Stoughton game, played on home ice less
than 24 hours after Herr’s funeral, was “understandably hard” to
get up for, yet it was also “nice to get back in the swing of
things” after an emotionally draining week.
“It wasn’t our
best game,” Shuman said afterward, “but I was really proud of
our guys for dealing with a tough week and going out and playing
well considering the circumstances.”
The Bulldogs
still managed to get on the board early and often, led by team
leading scorer Kevin Rooney, who had two of Canton’s three first
period goals. Sophomore Matt Malloy notched the other goal on a
nice hustle play, assisted by senior defenseman Ryan Bogosian.
The second
period featured a lot of penalties on both teams, but Canton was
able to add to its lead when Bobby Hayhurst scored on a power
play two minutes into the period – his first career goal.
Bogosian then got his first on another power play five minutes
into the third, which rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs.
Both goals were assisted by senior captain Matt Buckley, who is
having another outstanding year so far for the green and white.
On Saturday,
the team traveled to King Philip for what looked to be a close
game, but it was far from it as the Bulldogs embarrassed the
Warriors on their home ice with nine unanswered goals.
KP actually
struck first, going up 1-0 about three minutes into the game,
but the players lost their cool after that and wound up
collecting an unsightly 12 penalties for the game.
Although
impressed by the Canton offensive outburst, Shuman said he was
even more pleased that his team “stayed classy and stayed under
control the whole game.”
And with so
many Warrior penalties, Canton had the advantage almost the
entire afternoon. Overall, the team scored two in the first
period, three in the second, and four in the third.
Rooney was
able to pad his league-leading total with five more goals and an
assist, while senior captain Frank Eckler also had a hot hand,
finishing with two goals and one assist. Other goal scorers
included senior captain Billy Duggan and Bogosian, while Buckley
and freshman Nick O’Connor each finished with two assists.
With the two
wins last week, the Bulldogs improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in
the Hockomock League; however, their two games this week were
against opponents with a combined league record of 7-0-1: Oliver
Ames at home last night and at rival Franklin Saturday at 6:30
p.m.
