CHS girls' relay track teams excel at state meet

The CHS girls’
track team tied for third place in the state Class III relays
January 17 at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Boston. The event
is the precursor to state competition and gives an indication to
future scoring at the Class C meet in February.
Canton had two
first-place relays and a second-place showing in the shot put
competition, sharing third place overall with Hopkinton at 28
points. Bishop Feehan was the overall Division III winner at 48
points, followed by Pembroke High School with 44.
Some of the
girls who ran several relays included Anna Amico, Keishorea
Armstrong, Vicky Tondre, Sam Smith, Shirley Han, Colleen Healy
and Kate D’Orazio.
The 4x200
relay team — Amico, Armstrong, Tondre and Smith — placed first
among 46 teams and posted the third fastest time (1:47.6) in the
state this season.
The Bulldogs’
4x50-yard relay — Amico, Han, Armstrong and Smith — beat 37
other squads to capture first place with a time of 25.48
seconds.
The shot put
team — Chidimma Nwankwo, Amarachi Njoku and Angelina Salcedo —
placed second. Nwankwo finished second overall at 34 feet, eight
inches; Njoku was eighth at 30 feet, 11 inches; and Salcedo
finished 50th out of 72 competitors at 24 feet, nine
inches.
The 4x400 team
— Han, Tondre, Healy and D’Orazio — placed eighth out of 37
teams and qualified for the Class C Meet, and the 4x50 shuttle
hurdle relay — Healey, Ashley Pezzone, Mellyn Costello, and
Emily Cody — finished 11th out of 32 teams.
Other relay
teams that participated included the 1600 spring medley —
D’Orazio, Cody, Costello, and Kori White — which finished 23rd
out of 41 teams.
The distance
medley — Lauren Winter, Emily McGonigle, Amanda Crowley and Lila
Singer-Berk — finished 24th out of 28 teams.
CHS athletes
who participated in the long jump event included Smith, who
finished 27th out of 66 competitors at 13 feet, four
inches; Tondre, who finished 44th at 12 feet, eight
inches; and Molly Boushell, who finished 55th at 11
feet, 10 inches.
