Girls'
hoop outlasts Stoughton

It may have
been Senior Night at Stoughton High last Friday night, but the
CHS girls’ varsity basketball team was most concerned with
having to defend a Stoughton sophomore.
When Canton
played Stoughton on January 8, Chrystal Holland, the leading
scorer for the Black Knights, dropped 20 points on the Bulldogs,
leading Stoughton to a 55-41 road victory.
About a month
later, however, Canton was able to limit Holland to just five
points — none in the first three quarters of play — and this
time came away with a 42-40 win last Friday on the road.
“We knew we
had to shut down their best player and leading scorer [Holland]
and we did,” head coach Kaitlin Mills wrote in an e-mail to the
Citizen.
The victory
ended Canton’s six-game losing streak. The Bulldogs also lost
57-47 at North Attleboro last Tuesday. After going 1-1 in two
games last week, the team is 3-13 on the season.
Against NA,
Canton held a 14-point lead at halftime, but saw the
double-digit lead slip away in the second half. NA hit a
combined eight three-pointers in the third and fourth quarters
to help erase the deficit and held the Bulldogs to just six
points in the fourth quarter (all scored by Erika Bornemann).
“It was a very
disappointing loss because we played so well in the first half
and fell apart in the second [half],” Mills said.
Bornemann led
the way with 24 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks in the
losing effort.
Mills
described the Stoughton game as a “very physical” contest, with
players “diving on the floor for loose balls, rebounding and
driving to the hoop.” Olivia Murphy’s six fourth-quarter points
helped to give Canton the momentum it needed to hold on for the
win.
Murphy ended
up with 14 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks, while Bornemann
added 15 points, ten rebounds and four blocks. Mills credited
Nicki Fralick for playing “outstanding defense,” finishing with
four assists, three steals, and four blocks.
“I am very
proud of how the team played [last] Friday night,” Mills said.
“They fought and played hard until the end, and because of that
hard work and determination they won the game.”
The team was
scheduled to host non-league opponent Bedford on Wednesday and
will play King Philip at home on Friday.
