CHS junior Matt Sidney tied a Hockomock League Championship Meet
record with a best jump of six feet, nine inches as he won the
event and highlighted the teams sixth-place finish in the
league meet.
Sidney tied the mark of Phil Allessi of North Attleboro, who
jumped the 69 mark in 1995. Recently, Sidney was jumping in
the range of 62 to 63 and CHS head coach Chris Elgar said a
goal was for Sidney to hit 65. He will now move on to the
Class C championships this weekend.
To enjoy a five-inch personal improvement and break the CHS
high jump record is amazing, coach Chris Elgar said. Matt is
very close to adding 610 to his resume. Honestly, I would not
have been surprised to see 66 or 67, but what he did was
beyond description. I have never in a decade heard the Reggie
Lewis Center so quiet. You could hear his footsteps as he made
his approach.
Besides Sidneys achievement, Cantons next highest finishers
were junior Jon Vaughn, who finished third in the 55 meter
hurdles with a best time of 8.24 seconds, and senior Christian
Bates, who finished third in the 1,000 meter run with a time of
2:39.
Canton also had success in the long jump with three of the top
10 performers. Junior Jared Hobbs finished fourth at 18 feet,
four inches, followed by junior Tom Kerikas (6th,
171) and freshman Joey Sabbatino (10th, 136).
In the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles, Vaughn finished
fourth with a time of 8.32 seconds. Cantons other entries in
this event were Kerikas, who finished 15th at 9.42
seconds, and junior Chris Haidul, who finished 19th
in 11.99 seconds.
Other Canton finishers included (300 meter) Jordan Guyton, 7th,
37.23 seconds, and Marty Fauche, 11th, 38.72 seconds;
(600) Chris Ha, 12th, 1:34, Vlad Leopard, 13th,
1:35, and Gautam Madineedi, 17th, 1:38; (1,000)
Robert Bronstein, 18th, 3:06; (mile) Joey Ward, 8th,
4:59, Saeed Vossoughi, 12th, 5:09, and Paul Damico,
26th, 6:15; (two mile) Michael Bronstein, 9th,
10:46, Sean Akey, 22nd, 11:49, and Luke Hanna, 23rd,

T-14th, 54; (shot put) Chris Walker, 16th,
