With strong performances in the sprints and the shot put, the
CHS girls’ indoor track team finished fifth in the Hockomock
League Championships, one point behind fourth place North
Attleboro.
The best events for Canton was the 55-meter dash, in which
Canton had three of the top 10 finishers, and the shot put, in
which Canton had three of the top 12. In each case Canton had
the best performer, including senior Sam Smith who won the
55-meter dash in 7.33 seconds, and senior Amarachi Njoku who won
the shot put at 37 feet, three inches.
Mansfield’s Kayla Comer had beaten Smith by one-tenth of a
second (7.49 to 7.50 seconds) in the preliminaries, but Smith
came back with an even better time to win the event in the
finals. Other top finishers in the 55 meter included junior Anna
Amico (6th, 7.65 sec) and sophomore Vicky Tondre (7th,
7.69 sec).
Another very impressive event for the CHS track team was the
shot put. Besides Njoku winning the event, freshman Angelina
Salcedo placed eighth at 27 feet, 11 inches and senior Jazmine
Ramos finished 12th at 26 feet, one inch.
Other strong finishers for Canton included: Smith, high jump (3rd,
5’2”); senior Colleen Healy, 55-meter hurdles (6th,
9.45 sec); freshman Keishorea Armstrong, 300-meter (9th,
44.78 sec); Lila Singer Berk, two mile (13th, 13:01); and
sophomore Maireed Bagley, mile (13th, 6:16).
Other Canton finishers included: sophomore Kierra Cast Preston,
300 (17th, 47.65 sec); sophomore Nina Kalita, 600 (19th,
2:05.24); senior Emily McGonigle, 1,000-meter (17th,
3:47.68); freshman Lauren Winter, mile (6:26); and sophomore
Kristina McGrath, mile (18th, 6:35).
The season is now over for all but 14 members of the team, who
by their performance have qualified for the Class C meet on
Sunday, February 21. Participants include: Smith, high jump and
55 meter; Chidimma Nwankwo and Njoku, shot put; Tondre, long
jump; Amico, 55 meter; and Healey, 55-meter hurdles. Two relay
teams have qualified, including the 4x200 (Armstrong, Tondre,
Amico and Smith) and the 4x400 (Kori White, Shirley Han, Healey
and Kate D’Orazio).
