Down by 20
points going into the fourth quarter, the CHS boys’ basketball
team staged a ferocious comeback and came within five points of
tying the game before falling 69-60 to an 11-7 Bishop Stang team
Tuesday night in the first round of the Division 3 playoffs.
The Bulldogs
ended the season at 8-13.
Canton led at
the end of the first quarter 17-15 and at the half 33-26, but
the momentum shifted quickly in the third quarter as the
Bulldogs scored just three points to fall behind by 20.
Then, in the
fourth quarter, using a full-court press, the Bulldogs caused
several steals and converted them into layups to close within 10
with five minutes left in the game. They managed to close the
gap to five with three minutes to go and had two good chances to
cut the lead even further but missed a layup and free throws.
“It was a
microcosm of our season,” head coach Mike Devoll said
afterwards, “a horrible third quarter and an amazing fourth
quarter.”
Marc Abelard
led the Bulldogs in the losing effort with 17 points, followed
by Dan Boivert with 13 points and A.J. Nichols and Tyler Gavigan
adding 12 apiece.
