Both the
girls’ and boys’ CHS indoor track teams finished a very
respectable fifth place in last weekend’s Division 3 Indoor
Track Championships, held at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in
Boston. Because of their excellent performances, several Canton
individuals will continue on to the All-State Championships
scheduled for Friday, February 26, also at the Reggie Lewis
Center.
For the boys’
team, junior Matt Sidney, who set a league and school record
last week in the high jump with a best jump of six feet, nine
inches, placed second with a jump of six feet, four inches — two
inches below the winning jump.
The 4x200
boys’ relay team finished second out of 15 teams and almost won
the event, finishing at 1:34.5, 0.25 seconds away from the
Randolph relay team. Canton relay members included junior Jon
Vaughn, senior Jordan Guyton, junior Tyler Briggs, and senior
Marty Fauche. Vaughn also finished third in the 55-meter hurdles
with a best time of 8.1 seconds. He also finished second in the
preliminaries in the 55-meter dash (8.6 seconds) and went on to
finish third in the finals.
Other boys’
track team members who competed included: Guyton, 300 meter
dash, 12th, 39.05 seconds; senior Christian Bates, 14th,
1,000-meter, 2:46.61; and the members of the 4x800 relay team —
seniors Chris Ha, Joey Ward, Nikita Amelchenko and junior
Vladimir Leopard — who finished seventh out of 12 teams.
For the girls,
the 4x200 relay team set a new school record of 1:47.15 and
placed second overall out of 18 teams. The team included senior
captain Colleen Healey, sophomore Vicky Tondre, junior Anna
Amico, and senior Sam Smith.
Smith had an
outstanding day, placing second overall in the high jump at five
feet, two inches, and also fifth in the 55-meter dash at 7.51
seconds.
Senior
Amarachi Njoku, a first-time track and field athlete, placed
second in the shot put with a best throw of 35 feet, 6.75
inches.
All of the
above athletes will continue on to the All-State Championships
on Friday.
Other girls’
team members who placed but did not score included: Amico,
seventh in the 55-meter dash with a personal record of 7.57
seconds; Healey, 14th in the 55-meter hurdles with a
personal best of 9.43 seconds; Tondre, 10th in the
55-meter dash with a personal best of 7.62 seconds and ninth in
the long jump with a season best of 15’9.5”; and junior Chidimma
Nwankwo, 11th in the shot put, 32’6”. Unfortunately,
due to an injured runner, the girls’ 4x400 relay team did not
participate.
“It was a
great day overall, and I am really proud of the girls,” head
coach Kerri Oldmixon said. “They are very accomplished and it is
a wonderful team to coach because they are not only great
athletes but also great people. They have made the season lots
of fun.”
