Canton High
will be sending three members of its boys’ and girls’ indoor
track teams — junior high jumper Matt Sidney, senior shot-putter
Amarachi Njoku and senior sprinter Samantha Smith — to the New
England Track Championships this Friday night at the Reggie
Lewis Track Center in Boston.
The trio
qualified for the New England Championship as a result of their
performances in Friday’s Massachusetts Championships.
Sidney
continued his consistent streak with a 6’4” jump that placed him
fourth overall among 23 finalists. He just missed on his third
attempt at 6’6” — which would have earned him second place, one
inch behind the winning jump.
Njoku, a
newcomer to winter track this season, will be competing in the
shot put after her fourth-place throw of 38’4” — a personal
best.
Smith, a
veteran sprinter, will be competing in the 55-meter dash after
her fifth-place finish, with a personal best time of 7.30.
Congratulations also go to the other members of the CHS indoor
track teams who competed at the All States. Jon Vaughn continued
to show improvement in the 55-meter hurdles. He finished in 12th
place with a personal best 8.05 seconds. Coach Chris Elgar
noted, however, that Vaughn finished second among juniors — an
indicator of success for next winter, he said.
Elgar said the
4x200 relay (Vaughn, junior Tyler Briggs, senior Marty Fauche,
and senior Jordan Guyton) ran what would have been a fine
performance if not for a disqualification for a lane violation.
“This can
happen even at the Olympic level,” Elgar said. “Team USA has
unfortunately had a history of this numerous times of late.
“[The Bulldogs] would have finished around the top ten if it
were allowed.” For the girls, the 4x200 team of senior Colleen
Healey, junior Anna Amico, sophomore Vicky Tondre and Smith
placed seventh overall out of 19 teams with a time of 1:47.96.
Amico also competed in the 55-meter dash and placed 22nd
with a time of 7.63 seconds, and Smith placed 12th in the high
jump with a jump of five feet.
