An
error-free game resulted in a thrilling, 15-10 win over
league-leading North Attleboro for the CHS baseball team last
week. The Bulldogs collected 14 hits, exploding for nine runs in
the second inning. Although NA’s Rocketeers answered with eight
runs in the fourth inning, Canton added three more to seal the
win.
Dan
Pendergast had two hits and three runs batted in, Charlie
Beshwaty had three hits and five RBIs, and John McNeice had a
hit that knocked in two runs. Chris Galanis had three hits and
two RBIs and Chris Sullo had two hits.
Devin
O’Gorman got credit for winning the game as he pitched an inning
of relief. Mike Correira started and went into the fourth inning
winning 9-1 before the Rocketeers came back with eight runs.
Sullo relieved him and gave up four runs on three hits.
CHS head
coach Tom Healy was impressed with how the team responded to
North Attleboro’s comeback. “When they did come back, we just
went to work in our half of the inning, did some small ball work
with a suicide squeeze and a few stolen bases and retook the
momentum. No one panicked. We are a young team with only three
seniors, but we have been playing well of late and we are
starting to mature into a good team. Our defense has been
flawless lately. We haven’t made an error in the last six
games.”
The Bulldos
also lost two games last week, falling 4-2 to Oliver Ames and
5-3 to King Philip. Canton’s ace pitcher Rob McCarty went the
distance against OA, giving up four runs on seven hits while
striking out three batters. He made two mistakes, giving up two
two-run homeruns. Offensively, Beshwaty had a hit and an RBI,
Pendergast had a hit and scored a run and Mike Cahill drove in
the other run on a fielders’ choice.
The Bulldogs
had a chance to tie KP in the seventh inning when Pendergast,
who had two hits and two RBIs, hit a hot shot to the shortstop,
who made a great play to end the game.
Starter Joey
Wilkinson lasted three innings, giving up five runs on five
hits. O’Gorman pitched well in relief, giving up no runs on
three hits. Beshwaty had two hits including a double, Pendergast
had two hits that knocked in two runs, and McNeice had a hit
that also drove in a run.
Beshwaty
leads the team in hitting with a .370 average. McNeice is next
at .279; Beshwaty and McNeice are tied in RBIs with 11.
The Bulldogs
were scheduled to travel to Sharon on Monday, May 12 and to
Franklin today. They host Foxboro on Monday, May 19 and Scituate
on May 21. All games start at 3:30 p.m.
