The Canton
High School girls’ tennis team stretched its three-game winning
streak to four last Monday with a resounding victory over Oliver
Ames, but fell to an undefeated King Philip squad two days
later. The team also lost to perennial powerhouse North
Attleboro, which evened its overall record to 6-6.
The visiting
Bulldogs walked away from the OA contest with a 4-1 victory over
the Tigers. Although OA’s singles players are known for being
some of the best in the Hock, that didn’t stop the Bulldogs, who
took points at second and third. Junior Rachel Voke won at
second singles in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 6-3), and senior Kelly
Winter shut down her Tiger opponent in two sets (6-4, 6-1).
The
sophomore first doubles team of Carol Berman and Kendall
Sceviour won 6-4, 6-3, and the second doubles tandem of Kristen
Coco and Tammy Nghiem trounced their OA counterparts 6-2, 6-1.
“I was very
proud of all the girls’ efforts on Monday,” said coach Shelia
Conneely.
On
Wednesday, the hosting Bulldogs were shut out by an undefeated
KP team. But despite the 0-5 loss, the Bulldogs won more games
this time than they did the first time they met the Warriors,
with Winter playing a marathon, three-set match before falling
to her NA opponent.
On Thursday
Canton traveled to North Attleboro, a team that is currently in
second place in the Hock, and came away with another shut-out
loss. Voke lost her first set at second singles 6-2, rebounded
in the second set 4-6, but lost the third set 6-3.
Canton was
scheduled to play Sharon on Monday, Oliver Ames on Tuesday and
Franklin today.
