Girls' lax upset bid cut short by rain

Apparently, not all upsets are meant to be.

Although there was plenty of lacrosse left to play, the CHS lady Bulldogs were at least in a position to pull off the unthinkable Friday — a defeat of Hock powerhouse King Philip on its home field — when officials were forced to cut the game short due to dangerous weather conditions.

The girls had been crushed at home in the teams’ first meeting this season, but this time Canton was playing much better and had battled the Warriors to a three-all tie before action was suspended just 11 minutes in. Despite the strong start, the Bulldogs will have to try to duplicate the effort this afternoon, as the game will be replayed in its entirety beginning at 4 p.m.

Prior to Friday, Canton had been riding a three-game winning streak, which culminated in a well-executed, 14-7 victory over North Attleboro in the team’s final home game on Wednesday.

Brittany Lyons broke her own record for points in a season with a six-goal, four-assist performance, and Allie Boudreau, who had an outstanding previous week coming off a knee injury, continued to dominate with four goals and four assists.

Meaghan Daly, Arielle Spadea, Nicole Marcone and Sam Smith rounded out the scoring for Canton.

Wednesday’s game was also the final one at home for the team’s seven seniors: Lyons, Daly, Spadea, Julie Gormley, Becca McAdams, Gabby McGonagle and Marla Panciocco. The season will officially end today at KP, as the Bulldogs are 6-10 and therefore out of contention for a tournament berth.
