The CHS
girls’ tennis team went 2-1 last week, bringing its record above
.500 at 8-7. All three matches — against Sharon, Oliver Ames and
Franklin — were at home.
The Bulldogs
started the week with a hard-fought, impressive 2-3 loss to
perennial powerhouse Sharon. In the teams’ first meeting earlier
in the season, the Eagles downed the Bulldogs in a lopsided 5-0
shutout. This time around, it was a different story for the
upstart Bulldogs. Playing at first singles, Katie Slusarz may
have had her biggest win of the season over Hockomock League
star Sammy Toole.
“Katie’s
immense improvement since the beginning of the season was
apparent with a 7-6, 6-2 victory,” noted coach Sheila Conneely,
adding that Rachel Voke’s win at second singles was “equally
impressive,” as she had suffered a significant loss to her
Sharon counterpart in their first match. Voke dispensed of Sara
Spiegel in two sets: 7-6, 6-3.
On Tuesday
Canton played Oliver Ames and won 4-1. Voke again dominated at
second singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Kelly Winter won decisively at
third, 6-1, 6-0.
Both doubles
teams also won their matches. Kendall Sceviour and Carol Berman
won at first doubles 6-0, 4-6, 7-5, and Tammy Nghiem and Kristen
Coco won 6-3, 6-2 at second.
Another big
win for Canton came at home on Thursday against Franklin. The
first time these two teams met the Panthers edged the Bulldogs
3-2; this time around Canton handed the visitors a resounding
4-1 defeat.
Points came
again from Voke, 6-3, 6-2, and Winter, who shut down her
opponent in two quick sets, 6-0, 6-0. The first doubles tandem
of Berman and Sceviour won 6-1, 6-3, and the second doubles team
of Nghiem and Coco won 6-4, 6-3.
As of Monday,
Canton had two matches remaining and needed to win one of the
two to make it to the postseason.
