The Blue Hills Brewery is
coming to Canton
DID YOU
KNOW…
It appears
that in a few months, you may be able to buy a nice, cold bottle
of beer or ale that will be brewed and bottled right here in
Canton. Andris Veldis of Canton and his business partner,
Peter Augis of Westwood, plan to construct a new brewery
in 3,000 square feet of a converted vacant warehouse at 1020
Turnpike Street, a location that has been approved by the Canton
Zoning Board of Appeals.
The
new brewery will be called Blue Hills Brewery, and the
new brewers hope to produce about 120 to 150 barrels (or about
3,000 to 4,000 gallons) of beer and ale a month. Depending on
federal licensing and availability of necessary brewing
equipment, they hope to have their locally produced products in
bars and restaurants for upcoming Oktoberfest celebrations this
fall and more heavily in the local market by the summer of 2009.
Speaking of
the malt liquor, wine, and spirits industry, the town of
Weston, one of the last “dry” towns in Massachusetts (since
1838), finally approved a referendum to go wet and allow the
sale of wine in the only supermarket in town.
Heavily
traveled Bay Road is still closed to through traffic due
to the collapsed 2 x 2-foot culvert, which caused a dangerous
sinkhole, and the outlook for repairs is uncertain. A two-month
study is underway, and if it shows a larger culvert is needed,
it could take two years with permits and designs. According to
Stoughton officials, drivers coming from the south on Bay Road
have to now follow Highland Street all the way back to Easton.
West Street is closed to through traffic.
Local
veterans were relieved when the U.S. Department of Veteran’s
Affairs decided to cancel plans to consolidate treatment
services at the U.S. Medical Centers in Bedford, Brockton, West
Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain.
After two
hours of “sometimes impassioned” debate, the Milton town
meeting rejected a $2.66 million override by a vote of
141-80.
If you are
still looking for your economic stimulus payment check
from the IRS, and it hasn’t been directly deposited into your
bank account, cheer up; it will eventually get to you via
snail-mail. You should get it between May 16 and July 11,
depending on the last two digits of your social security number.
Those with the social security numbers ending in 00 through 25
should receive their check by the end of May. If your number
ends in 26-75, you should get your check before the end of June.
All others should get their checks by the end of July; but if
you owe back taxes, you can forget about receiving the full
stimulus payment.
The town
of Stoughton is still looking for a new superintendent of
schools to replace Claire McCarthy, who retired.
Speaking of
schools, be thankful you don’t live in Newton. There is a
strong possibility that Newton will have the most expensive
school in Massachusetts history when residents pass an override,
and a new high school is built. It is currently estimated at
$200 million.
The
Associated Press recently published a pre-Mother’s Day study
that estimated that the annual salary for stay-at-home mothers
would be nearly $117,000 per year, while a working mom who also
works at an outside job would only get $68,405. The largest part
of the $117,000 figure is based on overtime pay (over and above
a 40-hour work week). The 18,000 stay-at-home moms who were
interviewed for the survey reported working approximately 94.4
hours in a typical week.
The
American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 4
p.m. on Saturday, May 24, at the Masonic Lodge at 21 Church
Street. For more information, call 1-800-448-3543.
The
Canton Housing Authority is looking for a part-time
maintenance worker to work 12-15 hours per week to assist its
maintenance department. Send your resume and letter of interest
to 660 Washington Street, Canton, MA 02021, Attn: Mark Roy,
Executive Director.
If you are
interested in placing a non-binding question on the ballot in
the upcoming November 2008 election, forms are now available at
the Secretary of State’s office. Any registered voters can
sponsor a question, and each question needs 1,200 signatures by
July 9 to appear on the ballot in a local Senate District, and
200 for a House District.
Congratulations to Alyse Rocco of Canton High, a CHS track team
runner who won the recent State Track Coaches Invitational
two-mile run with a time of 11 minutes 16.54 seconds. An
accomplished runner, Alyse also won the Canton Fourth of July
Road Race Fun Run three years in a row when she was 10, 11, and
12.
Finally, May
1 marked the fifth anniversary of President Bush’s famous
“Mission Accomplished” speech aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS
Abraham Lincoln. The preposterous claim later became a symbol of
U.S. misjudgments and mistakes in the long and costly Iraq war.
Goals too
clearly defined can become blinkers.
That this is all for now folks;
see you next week.
