Softball team reaches D3 tourney

After struggling throughout much of the season against bigger schools in higher divisions, the CHS varsity softball team went out last week and won the one game that mattered most, beating Foxborough, 9-7, in an extra-innings thriller on Monday to secure a spot in the Division III postseason tournament.

While other Hockomock teams belong to division two or higher, both Canton and Foxborough have smaller school populations and are therefore classified as division three. Since the Bulldogs lost the first meeting against the Warriors, 8-4, they needed just a win on Monday in their season finale to finish at .500 and reach the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

The game certainly had plenty of excitement, as the two teams traded runs for the better part of the afternoon before Canton came through with two in the eighth to break a 7-7 tie, and then held on in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.

It was an excellent offensive effort for the Bulldogs, who all together belted ten hits and scored nine runs, including four in the seventh inning. Juniors Ali Zanetas and Brianna Trabucco led the team with three hits each, and Zanetas also knocked in three runs.

Other key contributors included Brianna Whelan, who went 2 for 2, and Chrissy Murray, who went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

“All around, it was an exciting and well played softball game,” said head coach Danielle McNamara, who was especially impressed with the way her team ran the bases.

“[Canton players] placed the bunts down when they needed to move runners, stole bases and took advantage of passed balls,” she said. “Every baserunner played very aggressive today and it was a big part of the win.”

In earlier action:

Canton dropped two games last week — one a blowout loss to Sharon on Wednesday, and the other a tough 3-0 loss to Franklin on Friday.

In the Franklin game, Murray pitched one of her best games of the season, giving up just four hits and striking out five batters. The team also collected six hits — five singles and a triple — but was unable to get a runner past third base.
