The Canton
boys had a great two days at the Hockomock Championship meet
last week at Franklin High, with Bobby Saraf winning the high
jump, the 4 x 100 meter dash placing first, and two other relays
running well and qualifying for the upcoming State Class C Meet.
The team
finished seventh overall, but several Bulldogs gave up a chance
to compete individually to compete in the relays.
Coach Devers
commented about the performance of the relay teams. “All three
of the relays have been a primary focus for us this year as they
give us a chance to show off the depth of the team, which has
been our biggest strength,” he said. “In the 4x400, Joey
Douglas, Bobby Saraf and Michael Bates showed how committed they
are to this concept, as all three opted out of open events in
order to focus on the relay.
“The fourth
member, Christian Bates, dropped out of his preferred 800 to the
300 hurdles because it was a shorter race and he knew it would
give him more recovery time in order to be ready for the relay.
This dedication and team-oriented nature has really helped the
team as a whole to be better as each athlete has realized that
it is important to make individual sacrifices in order to be
better as a team.”
On Thursday,
the first day of the field events, Saraf was guaranteed a league
all-star selection with a best jump of five feet, 10 inches and
Matt Wing tied for fifth overall with a best jump of five feet,
eight inches.
On Friday,
the running events started off well with senior Navid Vossoughi
running a nearly 20-second personal best to qualify for states
in the 2-mile, as he placed fifth in a deep field of runners.
Next on the
track was the 300 hurdles, an event that gave Christian Bates
the chance to display his diversity, according to Devers.
Primarily a distance runner, Bates dug in to place sixth in the
hurdles.
In the
sprints, the Bulldogs managed to place two athletes in the 100m
finals: Jordan Guyton (third) and Kevin Ward (eighth). In the
rest of the open events, the boys managed to run some great
times, but missed out on the podium as they competed against
some of the top athletes in the state.
In the final
three events of the meet, the 4x800, 4x100 and 4x400 relays, the
boys came together to display their depth and versatility as a
team.
The 4x800
team (Robbie Leone, Chris Ha, Andrew Ha and Vossoughi) placed
third overall and qualified for states.
In the
4x100m (Nash, Guyton, Kovalenkov and Ward) a couple of great
handoffs helped to pave the way for a first place finish and
guaranteed Hock All Star status.
The 4x400
team (Douglas, Saraf, Michael and Christian Bates) came together
as a team to qualify for states and placed fifth overall out of
the unseeded section.
