Canton
players help Canton A's to good start

The Canton
A’s are off to a strong, 3-1 start, thanks to former CHS pitcher
Greg Lyons who allowed a hit to the first batter but struck out
13 en route to a 2-0 win over Quincy last week.
The A’s, a
local entry into the semi-pro baseball league made up of
predominantly college players, are coached by Canton’s Cab
Devoll. The A’s started their season on Memorial Day, splitting
an opening day double header against the South Shore Braves —
winning the first game 4-2 and losing the second 4-3. The A’s
second victory was a 7-4 win over Norwell, followed by Lyons’
pitching gem over Quincy.
Besides
Lyons, Devoll said his other top pitcher is CHS graduate Chris
Smith, who pitches for Merrimack College. Lyons plays for
Southern New Hampshire College.
Some of the
team’s top hitters are also from Canton and include Bill Murray,
who also plays for Southern New Hampshire College, and Bill
Curry Jr. who is out of college.
Other top
players on the team include second baseman and relief pitcher
Ricardo Sullivan, who plays for Bentley College; designated
hitter and relief pitcher Brian Bodjiak of Elon College in North
Carolina; Steve Delanian of Trinity College, the best hitter on
the team; and Andy Dominquez of Wesleyan College.
Besides the
pitching work of Smith and Lyons, both who played Canton
American Legion ball, the A’s are bolstered this year by the
pitching of Andy Poliferno of Sharon, who was the Legion’s top
pitcher a year ago. Another key pitcher, said Devoll, is Joe
Caparrotta of Bridgewater State College.
Devoll said
the goal this year is to play at .500 or better in a very tough
league in order to make the Stan Musial Tournament.
The A’s
played at .500 last year (16-16-1) and made the state
tournament.
The A’s will
host Rockland tonight (June 5) at CHS at 6 p.m. and travel to
Coyle Cassidy in Taunton for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Sunday,
June 8.
