The Canton
High girls’ tennis team’s 2008 season came to an end on Saturday
in the first round of the MIAA tournament.
The
Bulldogs, who were seeded 17th in
the Division II south sectional tournament, upset the 16th seeded
Bishop Stang team in a preliminary round match. Although the win
earned them a spot in the first round, the Bulldogs opponent was
number 1 seeded Old Rochester.
On Friday
Canton traveled to North Dartmouth to play Bishop Stang and came
away with a 4-1 win. Senior Katie Slusarz had an impressive and
dominating win at first singles (6-3, 6-0), said coach Sheila
Conneely. Junior Rachael Voke won her match in three tough sets
at second singles (6-2, 2-6, 6-3). Both doubles teams also won
for the Bulldogs. Sophomores Carol Berman and Kendall Sceviour
won at first doubles 6-2, 6-3, and after dropping their first
set 4-6, seniors Tammy Nghiem and Kristen Coco, playing second
doubles, bounced back and took the next two sets 6-3, 6-3.
The win over
Bishop Stang catapulted Canton to a first round match with
top-seeded Old Rochester in Mattapoiset Saturday morning. Going
in as the underdog, the scrappy Bulldogs put up a fight before
falling to the tennis powerhouse, 4-1. In her last high school
match, third singles player Kelly Winter “absolutely dominated
her opponent,” said Conneely. Winter bested her Old Rochester
counterpart in two quick sets, 6-1,6-0. And at first doubles,
Berman and Sceviour lost a heartbreaking, marathon match, 6-4,
4-6, 4-6.
The Bulldogs
had an impressive season under first year coach Conneely.
“I am very
proud of all the girls’ efforts this season,” she said. “This
year’s seniors modeled hard work and sportsmanship for the
younger classmen, and they will be missed.”
