Alyse Rocco continued her quest to be the best miler in the
state as she won the Class C event and will continue on to the
All-States this weekend.
Rocco won
the event with a best time of 5:04.44, a five-second improvement
from her league victory a week ago. Her best time in the event
came in the winter season when she placed second in New England
with a time of 5:03. Her nearest competitor Saturday at the
Class C event, which was held at Milton High, was Alanna Poretta
of Pentucket who finished at 5:07.
Several
freshmen and sophomore members of the team performed very well
in preliminary competition.
“The girls
really put their best collective foot forward Saturday, with
both the 4x100 and 4x800 running their fastest group times,”
said coach Chris Elgar, adding that Julie Joseph leapt several
places past her seed in the triple jump.
Freshman Anna Amico finished 13th in
the preliminary heat of the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.04
seconds, and freshman Radiya Buchanan ran 31st in
the 400-meter dash with a time of 63.74 seconds. Sophomore Lila
Singer Berk ran 19th in
the two mile with a time of 12:24.57.
Two
members of the team also performed well in the triple jump:
Joseph finished 11th with
a jump of 33 feet, six inches and Geneva Poshkus finished her
CHS jumping career with a best jump of 32 feet, 10 inches.
The
three relay teams that qualified all ran respectable races. The
girls’ 4x800-meter relay of Rocco, Sara Teague, Kate D’Orazio
and Christie Keough ran a respectable seventh place with a time
of 10:13.5; the 4x100-meter relay team of Shirley Han, Erica
Guenthner, Joseph and Amico, ran 17th with
a time of 53.14 seconds, and the 4x400 relay unit of Sarah
Jankowski, Buchanan, Han and Jenny Sidney finished 20th at
4:29.34.
Boys’
Results
According to
CHS boys’ coach Nick Devers, the team members performed well
collectively and many had personal records on the season.
“As has been
the case all season, the boys did not have an individual
stand-out that placed in one of the open events, but rather
several solid groups of athletes who came together in the relays
to put Canton on the score board,” he said.
The 4x100
team ran one of its fastest times all year to earn fifth place
overall, while the 4x800 team ran its best time of the year
(8:33.12) to take sixth place.
The 4x100
relay team finished with a great time of 44.94 seconds and
included Kevis Nash, Jordan Guyton, Dmitry Kovalenkov and Kevin
Ward. The 4x800 relay unit included Robbie Leone, Chris Ha,
Andrew Ha and Christian Bates.
In the
last event on the track for the day, the 4x400 team competed
well and managed to move up several spots to 15th despite
being the 19th seeded
team. This unit, which finished at 3:45.56, included Joey
Douglas, Bobby Saraf, Michael Bates and JonVaughn.
In
other individual highlights, Navid Vossoughi ran his second best
2-mile time ever, finishing at 10:15.2. In the 200 meters,
Guyton and Vaughn had solid performances. Guyton ran 24.25 for
16th place
with Vaughn finishing in 17th place
at 24.41. Christian Bates continued to show how tough he is,
running another solid race in the 300 hurdles and finishing in
27th place
at 44.44 seconds.
In the
field events Saraf cleared six feet in the high jump to tie for
13th place,
while Matt Wing’s hurdling cut into his jumping time, causing
him to just miss out on the six-foot barrier. Wing finished 21st at
17:40 seconds in the 110 hurdles.
Senior
Ralph Finis finished his Canton track career with a strong
showing in the shot put, having one of his finest overall days
yet this season with a heave of 43 feet, three inches as he
finished in 16th place.
Next up for
the boys is the decathlon at Bishop Feehan High School on Monday
and Tuesday, June 9 and 10. Tom Waldman, Michael Bates, Saraf,
Wing, Douglas and Christian Bates will represent CHS.
