The Canton
American Legion Post 24 baseball team begins a new season this
week — with a new schedule, in a new division, and with several
new high school and first-year college players from Canton and
Sharon.
This year’s
team will play Norwood, Dedham, Walpole, Medfield, Westwood,
Needham, Norfolk and Foxboro. The only holdover from last year’s
schedule is rival Stoughton.
Last year
the team finished 9-11 and was the final seed to make the
playoffs in its division. Canton made a good showing in the
first round of the district playoffs against a 19-2 Walpole team
but was ultimately knocked off after losing consecutive close
games, 4-3 and 8-5.
Canton
players on this year’s squad include Charlie Beshwaty, Trevor
Boyce, Mike Cahill, Robbie Davis, Chris Ezepik, John McNeice,
John Power, Gary Powers, Bryan Rooney, Mike White and Kevin
Godin.
Sharon
players include: Andrew Ferrera, Nate Fishman, Jonah Francese,
David Khrakovosky, Ryan Melaugh, David Roberto, and Matt Tung.
Returning players with experience on the Legion team include
Beshwaty, Boyce, Ezepik, Powers, White, Ferrera, Melaugh and
Tung.
Head Coach
Al Jackson will be choosing from a group of young pitchers,
including Khrakovosky, Power, Davis, Roberto and Godin. Key
hitters on the team include Tung, White, Cahill, Beshwaty, Boyce
and Melaugh.
Post 24 was
scheduled to begin its season Tuesday night at Stoughton. The
team will travel to Walpole today (June 11) and to Medfield on
Saturday, June 14, and will host Westwood on Sunday, June 15,
Foxboro on June 16 and Needham on June 15. Assistant coaches
include Walter Mann, Rob Davis, Charles Beshwaty and Bob Brown.
