The Canton
A’s have improved to 11-5 and are climbing in the standings. The
Cranberry League team earned four victories in five games last
week, thanks to good pitching by Canton natives Chris Smith and
Greg Lyons, and Sharon’s Andy Poliferno.
The A’s
swept a doubleheader at home Sunday against the Wrentham Wrens,
winning 5-3 behind six strong innings by Smith, and 14-6 with
another strong outing by pitcher Ricardo Sullivan. Relievers Tim
Bonham and Brian Bodjiak recorded the saves in the doubleheader.
Leading the
attack for the A’s in the first game was Mike Trachtenberg, with
two hits and two stolen bases, and Joey Belmosto, with two hits
and two walks. In the second game, Steve Delanian hit a long
homerun and a double for three RBIs and Andy Dominguez hit a
three-run homerun and had two hits.
Belmosto and
Trachtenberg each had two hits, with Trachtenberg also
contributing with three stolen bases.
Earlier in
the week, the A’s beat first-place Rockland 6-0 as Lyons
completed the shutout, limiting Rockland to two hits while
striking out 11 batters. Canton’s Billy Curry had two hits and a
run scored, and Rossi had three hits and scored two runs.
Dominguez had a hit that knocked in two runs.
Poliferno
beat the South Side Dirt Dogs 13-2 with six strong innings of
pitching. Trachtenberg had a hit for two RBIs, Bodjiak had a key
hit for three RBIs, and Curry had a hit, three walks and scored
three runs. Canton’s Billy Murray also chipped in with a hit,
which scored two runs, and Kevin McCarthy also had two hits and
scored three runs.
Head Coach
Cab Devoll said his team is playing sound, two-way baseball —
each of the A’s pitchers has gone all six innings and the team
has several hot batters. Five hitters are above .300, with Curry
at .583, Rossi at .500, Trachtenberg at .345, Dominguez at .313
and McCarthy at .300.
