Playing
eight games in ten days and missing several players, the Canton
American Legion Edward J. Beatty Post 24 team dropped to 2-7-3
in division play last week. Canton beat Norfolk 4-1 and tied
Westwood 5-5, but dropped three consecutive games on three
successive days to Westwood 4-2, Norwood 10-1, and Medfield
12-6.
The
highlight of the week was the first win of the season by Rob
Davis Jr. who pitched a complete game, 4-1 win over Norfolk.
John McNeice had two RBI and key hits by Andrew Ferrera led the
team on offense.
Canton
appeared to be en route to a win over Westwood, as Dave Roberto
pitched well into the seventh inning with Canton leading 5-3
before Westwood tied the game. Ryan Melaugh and Ferrera had
several hits.
The next
night, Canton hosted Westwood and the contest was competitive.
Sharon’s Nate Fishman pitched deep into the game. Down 1-0,
Canton’s Trevor Boyce laced a two-run single in the third,
giving Post 24 a 2-1 lead. Great plays by shortstop Charlie
Beshwaty, first baseman Bryan Rooney and right fielder Andy
Ferrera helped to maintain the score until the sixth when
Westwood tied things up.
Canton had a
chance to win in the bottom of the seventh with the bases
loaded, but Beshwaty lined out hard to the shortstop to end the
threat. Westwood scored two in the top of the eighth to win the
game on a single, two walks, a passed ball and two other hits.
On Sunday
night, Gary Powers and John Power pitched well in spots, but
Medfield’s offense came on strong in the middle innings to win
12-6. Medfield took an 8-1 lead into the fourth inning, but
Canton came back with three runs on RBIs by Boyce, Rooney and
Beshwaty. Despite the loss, the Canton defense sparkled; a
runner trying to steal second was caught by first-time catcher
Boyce, Mike White made a great running catch deep in
centerfield, and Fishman was strong at third base.
After a break
for the holiday, play resumes Monday, July 7, at home against
Walpole, and Wednesday, July 9, against Westwood.
