Canton
residents win July 4 road race

Promising CHS junior runner Christian Bates and veteran long
distance runner Shelia Donovan cruised to victory in the men’s
and women’s division in the 41st running
of the annual five-mile July 4 road race, held Friday morning in
drizzly, cloudy, and mild conditions.
 Bates,
a diversified track and field runner at CHS, had a lot of speed
left as he raced to a 30:46 time — almost a minute better than
his run from a year ago. Donovan, a six-time participant, won
her second women’s division title with a time of 35:45.
Entries were
down from a year ago as 34 runners participated in the youth
race and 75 entered the adult race. Last year, the race drew 161
runners — 51 in the Fun Run and 110 in the five-mile.
The
five-mile race began and ended at the Canton Town Club on Bailey
Street. The race proceeded down Bailey Street to Mechanic
Street, then to Washington Street, past the high school to
Pleasant Street, on to Bolivar Street and back to the Town Club.
The 1.8-mile Fun Run was straight up and then back down Bailey
Street to Messinger Street.
This year’s
Fun Run winner was 11-year-old Tyler Glick of Foxboro, who sped
to a 10:38 time. Glick finished fourth a year ago.
A
family-oriented race, men, women, and children of all ages
participated — from the oldest participant, Ed Damish, to the
youngest, 3-year-olds Zane Clark and Olivia Maffeo.
July 4 race
organizer Joe DeFelice also announced that the Reebok-CAI
Homecoming Race will be held Saturday, Sept. 27.
