Coach Chris Elgar is excited about this year’s version of the
Canton High School boys’ cross country team and is shooting
for at least a .500 record, as the team is determined to improve
upon last season’s 1-7 mark.
With seven freshmen having already joined and the potential
to add more, the team is expected to be bigger than past years’
squads.
Elgar said team captains Andy Ha and Tom Waldman have done an
outstanding job with recruiting and getting teammates to work
out during the summer. He is expecting good results from senior
Navid Vosoughi, who ran very well for the track team last spring
in the distance races, and he has already seen good workouts
from senior Ryan Hanlon, who could very well contend for a top-five
position.
“We have such a wealth of senior and junior leadership, with,
by far, the most depth in several years,” said Elgar. “Now we
have added a real surge in rookie involvement to make our program
more complete.”
Canton’s first race will be in the Hockomock League Jamboree
on September 11 at the Sheep Pasture in Easton, and the team
opens its regular season on September 18 at home against North
Attleboro and Franklin.
