With 50
athletes, led by senior captains Andy Ha, Chris Sullo, and Kevin
Ward, the CHS boys’ indoor track team is hoping for a good
season.
Head Coach
Chris Elgar sent his youngest and newest members to get some
experience in Saturday’s league jamboree at the Franklin track,
where most of the meets are held. Elgar said he and Coach Nick
Devers were pleased with the results. “As you would expect,” he
added, “there are events that we are strong in and some that we
hope to develop.”
Scoring well
were the high jump, shot-put, and distance crews.
The high
jump and hurdle crew represented CHS nicely, with four members
clearing 5’2”, including newcomers John Vaughn and Ray Bass.
Matt Wing cleared 5’8" and Chris Sullo hit 5’10”. Sullo and
Wing finished first and second, respectively, while Vaughn and
Bass finished in the sixth position. That same crew also placed
second in the shuttle hurdles. Also scoring was the 4x6-lap
relay (about 900 meters) of Chris Ha, Mike Bronstein, Matt
Carney and Christian Bates.
The shot put
crew finished fifth behind Jeff and Dan Alexander and newcomer
Dmitry Kovalenko, who all surpassed 32-foot throws.
The girls’
team is coached by Kate Coleman Kazanjian, assisted by coach
Kerri Oldmixon.
Team
captains are Alyse Rocco, Geneva Poshkus and Emily Krueger. Five
seniors, five juniors, 19 sophomores and four freshmen comprise
the 33-member squad
“The kids
are doing really well,” Coleman-Kazanjian said after Saturday’s
jamboree. “We are very fortunate to have great senior
leadership this year. We are a small team, but have a lot of
quality. We have Sam Burrows and Ali Canney leading the way in
the shot put, Alyse Rocco and Lila Singer-Berk in the distances,
Sam Smith in the high jump and sprints, and Geneva Poshkus and
Colleen Healy in the hurdles.”
Both Canton
teams will face Franklin and King Philip in a tri-meet at the
Franklin facility at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 15.
